Antique Edwardian Sterling Silver Ladies Compact/Perfume 19048639
This is an unusual circular antique Edwardian sterling silver ladies clutch compact/perfume clearly hallmarked for London 1904 and in lovely original condition.
An Edwardian lady perhaps attending a dance or other social event would carry this with her, held by the silk rope looped around her wrist, and with a similar silk rope tassel hanging from the bottom.
Between dances she could flip open the compact in the upper section and check her looks in the mirror and apply powder if she felt like it and if she felt she needed freshening up she could open the bottom part and there would be her perfume .
It’s 3 1/4” (8 cms) long x 1 1/2” 4 cms) across and I would say the silk handle is entirely original but the tassel at the bottom, although having obviously been there for a long time, may have been replaced at some time as it is a slightly different colour to the handle which may have faded a little from the original.
It has the maker’s mark for Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd who worked at Bartlett’s Passage Holborn Circus London and were first registered at that address in 1893 - they were famous for making silver boxes, buckles, compacts and lockets.
This lovely item will come in a gift box with a certificate of authenticity.
