Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Vapheio Cup 18996793
This is an interesting and unusual antique sterling silver replica of one of the famous Vapheio bowls from the tomb of Vapheio in Greece.
It depicts taming of wild bulls and the bowl has a tamer as part of the pattern who is in the process of tying a rope around the bull’s leg.
The original naturalistic style of the heavily cast bowl was added to by chasing with a sharp tool, and it looks as if the manufacturers of this bowl worked hard to achieve the same look.
This silver copy of an original gold item was made to satisfy a late 19th Century world demand for artefacts of the discovery, and similar pieces are found in collections all over the world including the Harvard Art Museum .
It measures 2 3/4″ (7 cms) tall x 3 1/2″ (9 cms) across the top and is in excellent original condition.
It’s hallmarked for Chester 1899 with the maker’s marks for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes and it weighs 241.3 grams.
